from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roma Party ( Romanian Partida Romilor , romani Partida le Romenge ) is a political party that represents the interests of the Roma minority in Romania . It was formerly known as the “Roma Social Democratic Party” ( Partida Romilor Social-Democrată ). Its chairman is Nicolae Păun . The party currently holds a permanent seat in the Romanian House of Representatives.

Representation in parliament

The Roma party was founded in 1990 after the Romanian Revolution . It is the official political association of the Roma minority in Romania and therefore has a permanent seat in the House of Representatives regardless of its electoral success. Since it was approved in 1992, the party has run in all elections, but has so far not been able to pass the 5 percent hurdle required to win additional seats. In the parliamentary elections in 2000 and 2004, the Roma Party signed a mutual electoral support protocol with the Social Democrats.

Gheorghe Răducanu has held permanent seats from 1992 to 1996, Mădălin Voicu from 1996 to 2000 and Nicolae Păun from 2000 from 2004, from 2004 to 2008 and since 2008. The party representatives are elected at the local level.

In the parliamentary elections on November 30, 2008 , the party entered under the Romanian name Partida Romilor "Pro-Europa".
