Mădălin-Ştefan Voicu (born July 10, 1952 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian musician and politician from the Roma ethnic group .

Life

Voicu is a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1996 . He is one of only two Roma politicians in the current parliament. The second is Nicolae Păun , who holds the guaranteed seat for the Roma minority.

He is the son of Ion Voicu , a well-known Romanian Roma musician. In his youth he was a close friend of Nicu Ceauşescu , the son of the Romanian communist leader Nicolae Ceauşescu , as well as of other young members of the nomenklatura .

Voicu graduated from the National University of Music, completed training as a conductor at various schools abroad and was active in orchestras in Craiova and Ploiești .

He began his political career as a member of the now dissolved Party for Freedom and Social Unity (Romanian Partidul Libertății și Unității Sociale , PLUS), then became active in the Social Democratic Party of the Roma and was elected to the minority seat in the House of Representatives in the 1996-2000 legislative period before campaigning for PSD in 2000.

On July 22, 2015, Voicu was appointed by Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea as the new head of the Consulate General of Romania in Bonn , but was unable to take up his post as planned on September 15, 2015 due to the withdrawal of the appointment by Prime Minister Victor Ponta .
