Parthenion (mountain)

The Parthenion ("The Mountain of the Virgin", from the Greek Παρθένιο - Parthenio) is a 1215 m high mountain in Greece .
location
It is located on the Greek Peloponnese in the border region between Arcadia and Argolis . The villages closest to the mountain are Achladokampos in the northeast and Partheni in the southwest. The next big city is Tripoli 16 km to the west .
history
In ancient times, Philippides is said to have met the god Pan on Mount Parthenion. The Athenian Philippides was on his way to Sparta , before the battle of Marathon in 490 BC. To ask the Spartans for support. Pan asked Philippides why he was not being given enough veneration in spite of his numerous contributions to Athens. After peace was restored in Athens after the victory at Marathon, the Athenians dedicated a temple to Pan at the place of his appearance and an annual festival.
