Chadian Progressive Party

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chadian Progressive Party ( French Parti Progressiste Tchadien , abbreviation PPT ) was the only approved party in Chad from January 1962 to June 1973 .

history

The PPT was founded in 1946 by Gabriel Lisette and François Tombalbaye, among others, as part of the West African Rassemblement Démocratique Africain of the Ivorian Félix Houphouët-Boigny . The party was dominated from the beginning by people from southern Chad (animists and Roman Catholic Christians). In 1957 Lisette became the chairman of the PPT and Prime Minister of Chad. In 1959 Lisette resigned his position as party leader and was replaced by François Tombalbaye, who also succeeded in becoming prime minister. A year later, Tombalbaye founded the independent Republic of Chad with a president. In 1962 he made Chad a one-party state .

President Tombalbaye abolished the PPT in June 1973 because of the ongoing corruption in its ranks, and replaced it with the Mouvement National pour la Révolution Culturelle et Sociale (MNRCS). After the April 13, 1975 coup in which Tombalbaye was killed, the MNRCS was banned.
