The Partido Democrático was the liberal party in Nicaragua between 1821 and 1893. It was officially founded when the Capitanate of Guatemala became independent from Spain in the liberal stronghold of León (Nicaragua) . In it, merchants organized themselves to oppose the privileges of the former officials of the crown and clergy organized in the conservative party, and to enforce freedom of trade.

Prominent members of the Partido Democrático from the early days of Nicaragua's independence were Bernabé Somoza and José María Valle, alias El Chelón . Patricio Rivas was elected Supremo Director (Head of State of Nicaragua) in 1840 . Francisco Castellón Sanabria led in May 1854 together with General Máximo Jerez Tellería , the uprising of the Partido Democrático , which was directed against the transfer of the seat of government from León (Nicaragua) to Granada (Nicaragua) by Fruto Chamorro Pérez . On June 16, 1854, he promulgated a decree prohibiting support for the government of Chamorro, based in Granada. In October 1854, Francisco Castellón Sanabria signed a contract with the US military service provider Byron Cole, which stipulated the delivery of 200 men, who were led by William Walker in June 1855 .

After the first battle in Rivas on June 29, 1855, William Walker took the seventh point of the contract as a legal basis, that he was naturalized as a Nicaraguan, and was elected President of Nicaragua by his brothers in arms.

When José Santos Zelaya came to power on July 24, 1893, the Partido Democrático was renamed Partido Liberal .
