The pataca was the currency in the Portuguese Timor colony between 1894 and 1959. It was divided into 100 avos . The Timorese Pataca was equivalent to the Pataca Macaus , whose coins and banknotes were also in circulation in Portuguese Timor. They were available in values from five to 20 avos and one to 100 patacas.

In 1912, the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) in Portuguese Timor issued its own banknotes . These were 10,000 one-pataca notes and 2,500 25-pataca notes, both banknotes from Macau with the additional imprint “Pagavel em Timor”. Since these banknotes were from 1906, they still showed the royal coat of arms with a crown. Five pataca bills were issued in 1932 and 1945. In addition to the pataca, the Dutch guilder was still in use until May 4, 1918, when the partaca officially became the only recognized currency in the colony. Mexican and Macau coins were still in use , but when there was a silver and hence coin shortage in Macau, the BNU introduced its own banknotes on January 2, 1920.

In 1945, the company finally had its own coins of 10, 20 and 50 Avos. The size of the coins corresponded to the Portuguese at that time at 20 centavos and one and two and a half escudos . This reflected the fixed exchange rate of one to five. When the escudo was introduced in Portuguese Timor in 1959 , the exchange rate was set at 5.6 escudos for one pataca.

During the Japanese occupation in World War II from 1942 to 1945, the Japanese introduced their own paper money.
