Patong ( Thai : ป่า ตอง ) is a municipality ( tambon ) in the district ( Amphoe ) Kathu in the province of Phuket . Phuket is located in the southern region of Thailand . In the municipality is the Patong Beach ( Thai หาด ป่า ตอง - Hat Patong, English: Patong Beach ), a well-known beach and tourist resort on the west coast of the island of Phuket .

Patong Beach, a 3.5 km long beach that runs along the entire western side of the town of Patong, is the main holiday destination of the island, known for its nightlife and the shopping malls, where you can shop cheaply. From the end of the 1980s, the beach became increasingly popular, especially among Western European tourists. There are many hotels and hotel chains there. Patong Beach is also popular with diving tourists.

Incidents

On December 26, 2004, Patong Beach, like many other coastal areas on the west side of Phuket and Thailand, was hit by a tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean quake . The tsunami wave caused great devastation on the coast and the flat hinterland and many people were killed. Patong Beach was one of the hardest hit areas of Phuket, although the destruction here was not nearly as bad as in neighboring Khao Lak .
