Patrick "Pat" McCarthy (born December 4, 1954 in Canada ) is an Australian martial arts teacher. As holder of the 9th Dan Karate and the title of Hanshi awarded by the Dainippon Butokukai , he is one of the most high-ranking non-Asian teachers in the western world. McCarthy started karate at the age of 10. He later studied the history of Okinawa Karate and its origins in Chinese Quanfa . In the course of these studies he lived in China and Japan for several years, studied there under various masters and published several books, including an annotated translation of Bubishi . He calls his martial art style Koryū Uchinādi .

Today McCarthy presides over the first graduate degree for martial arts instructors recognized by the Australian government and is director of the International Ryu Kyu Karate Research Society (IRKRS).
