from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Patrick W. Schmitz is a German economist . He is professor at the Political Science Department at the University of Cologne and Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London.

life and work

Schmitz studied economics in Bonn, did his doctorate there and did his habilitation there. His doctoral supervisor is Urs Schweizer from the University of Bonn .

Schmitz has published in major journals, including the American Economic Review and the Review of Economic Studies . In his research he deals with theoretical and applied microeconomics. He is particularly interested in fundamental questions: Why do companies even exist? So what is the difference between transactions within companies and transactions that take place through the market? What are the effects of different ownership structures, e.g. B. in terms of investment incentives? How should one organize public projects, for example to prevent excessive cost increases? Schmitz examines such questions with the help of economic contract theory, i. H. with formal models in which information asymmetries play a central role. In some of his work he has also dealt with experimental tests of contract theory ideas.

In the Handelsblatt Ökonomen Ranking 2015, which analyzes the research performance of around 2,300 economists from Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland based on the quality of the publications, it is ranked 4th in terms of current research performance and 13th in the life's work ranking. In the 2008 ranking of the research monitoring work group of the Verein für Socialpolitik, Schmitz is the youngest among the top 25 German economics professors with the most extensive life's work, measured by the quality of the publications.

Awards

In 2006 Schmitz received the Karl Arnold Prize of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and was named the best young German economist by the Handelsblatt. In 2007, WirtschaftsWoche named Schmitz one of the most active German economics professors in research, and Capital magazine ranked him among the 160 most outstanding young professionals in Germany in its "Young Elite" series. In 2015 Schmitz received the Hans Kelsen Prize endowed with 240,000 euros in research funds.
