Cartridge painter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cartridge painter or carton draftsman was a training occupation in connection with the manufacture of tapestries in the 15th century . In Brussels and Antwerp they formed their own guild group. The name is derived from the French patron (sample, template). His task was to implement the design of the wall mural true to scale in original size on canvas or cardboard. In this way he prepared the work of the caster.

Later, cartridge painting was also understood to be a technique of placing cut-out patterns on surfaces and painting them in as desired, as a forerunner of stencil art , so to speak .

In Germany from 1949 to 1978 there was the profession of pattern draftsman and patroneur , which was replaced by the successor profession of textile pattern designer with specializations.
