Old timpani in the Göttingen City Museum

A Paukhelm is in the language of the student associations a protective helmet for timpani , so for practice of student fencing in preparation for the scale is required. Since injuries should be ruled out during drumming, so-called timpani clubs with blunt blades and appropriate protective weapons such as the timpani helmet are used.

The Paukhelm protects the top of the head with a solidly reinforced leather cap and the face with a metal grille. There is a leather bib under the grille to protect the neck. A leather strap is usually attached to the bib, which is pulled tight with the left hand to prevent the helmet from sliding up.

With the sharp length, the head is no longer protected with a helmet, dangerous injuries are excluded by the goggles and the ruff .
