Pauline Black (born Belinda Magnus on October 23, 1953 in Romford , England ) is a British singer , actress and author , best known as the singer for the band The Selecter .

Life

Black was born to a young British Jewish woman and a Nigerian. Her father had come to London as a student and was a Yoruba prince. She was adopted by a white couple and given their last name Vickers. Black studied from 1971 at the "Lanchester Polytechnic" (today Coventry University ) and worked as an X-ray assistant in Coventry . Since then she has known her husband Terry Button, to whom she has been married since 1980.

In 1976 Pauline sang in local pubs. In May 1979 she went with friends to a rehearsal where the band The Selecter was founded, with her as a singer. At that time, she changed her last name to Black.

Together with the bands The Specials and Madness , The Selecter founded the Two Tone movement. The band split up in 1982, but there have been several reunions since then.

Pauline Black released a few solo singles, e.g. B. Shoo-rah, Shoo-rah . In 1995 the album Prime Cuts appeared , which mainly contains compositions by Pauline Black, under the band name Pauline Black and The Selecter .

In 2010 Pauline Black went on tour with The Selecter on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the debut album Too Much Pressure . After there were disputes over the band name in 2011, Pauline Black secured the trademark rights to The Selecter . In 2015 the band toured to present the new CD Subculture .

In 2007, Black voiced the BBC documentary Soul Britannia, which tells the story of British soul music. In the documentary Reggae Britannia she appears as an interviewer and as a member of The Selecter. In 2014 and 2015 she hosted programs as a guest on BBC Radio 6.

Autobiography

In 2011 Pauline Black published her autobiography Black by Design .
