Paulinus of Antioch (martyr)
Paulinus of Antioch was Bishop of Lucca and suffered during the persecution under Emperor Nero to 67 n. Chr. The ordeal . Historical sources about his life, work and death are not available.
According to tradition, Paulinus accompanied the apostle Peter of Antioch to Rome and was consecrated by him as bishop of Lucca. After Paulinus had converted numerous people there, Nero had him captured and thrown to the wild animals in the arena; however, these could not harm him. Paulinus died only after further torture. The Christians Antonius and Valerius took the corpses of Paulinus and the Severus and Theobaldus executed with him and buried them with honor in Lucca. Valerius succeeded Paulinus as bishop of Lucca.
Paulinus is first mentioned in an inscription in 1197. On June 15, 1261 it was revealed to a brother Jacobus through an apparition that the body of St. Paulinus is buried in a church; the brother should take care of the collection of the relics. The inscription “Here rests the body of Blessed Paulinus, the first bishop of Lucca and disciple of the Apostle Peter, and St. Severus and Cheobaldus ”found. The church was consecrated to Paulinus , who from then on was venerated as the patron saint of Lucca. His feast day is July 12th.
