Paulucci memorial
The Paulucci Monument is a monument to General Filippo Paulucci in the Latvian capital Riga .
It is located in the Wöhrmannscher Garten park on the eastern edge of Riga's old town.
Design and history
Paulucci was appointed governor in Riga from October 23, 1812. Under his leadership, the recently destroyed suburbs of Riga were rebuilt and essential elements of the urban infrastructure were created. As early as 1816, during Paulucci's lifetime, merchants from Riga took an initiative to erect a monument in honor of Paulucci, but Paulucci refused. Nevertheless, a cast-iron memorial was made, but according to the wish of the person to be honored, it was not erected. After Paulucci's death in 1849, the erection was to take place, but it was found that the monument could no longer be found.
In 1851 a new monument was created. In 1887 it was damaged by vandalism and then renewed. The memorial has been shown in a museum exhibition since the 1930s.
In 2003, on the initiative of the Italian ambassador to Latvia, Maurizio Lo Re , with financial support from the entrepreneur Jevgeņijs Gombergs, a copy was made and placed again in the Wöhrmann Garden.
The black monument is 1.70 meters high. It has very simple inscriptions on the front and back at the request of the honoree.
On one side is in German , the date of the inauguration Pauluccis simply stated:
THE
23rd OCTOBER
1812
On the other side there is the Russian inscription with the same meaning :
В память 23го октября 1812
