from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pavilion Cinema is a cinema building in the Scottish city of Bathgate in the Council Area West Lothian . In 2008 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Monument Category C. After the movie theater operation was stopped, it was converted into a bingo hall.

history

George Green is considered the most successful cinema operator of his time in Scotland. In 1911 he opened his first movie theater and subsequently built a chain of cinemas in southern Scotland. As with numerous buildings in the Green chain, the Scottish architect John Fairweather was responsible for the design of the Pavilion Cinema in Bathgate . It is the oldest surviving house in the Green chain.

When it opened on March 25, 1920, the Pavilion Cinema replaced an older Green Cinema in Bathgate. This Picturehouse was created in 1913 when an ice rink was converted. The movie theater in the Pavilion Cinema was discontinued in 1967. As a result, the building was redesigned and has since housed a bingo hall.

description

The Pavilion Cinema has a defining character for George Place in the center of Bathgate. It comes from the time when profit orientation gained importance through efficient use of space. For this reason, the foyer only takes up a small area. The cinema had 1067 seats. The building is designed in the neoclassical style and is one of the late cinema buildings in this style before the reorientation to Art Deco .

The entrance area is located on the northeast-facing gable side at Geoerge Place. The facade is symmetrical. Above the six double-leaf, wooden swinging doors there is a colorfully glazed Diocletian window . Simple pillars flank the area and support a grooved cornice with corbels . The name PAVILION can be read in a contrasting color between the window and the cornice . Below the gable is an oculus . To the right is a narrow, eaves-standing outbuilding with an unadorned door. Its gable roof is covered with slate, while the main building closes with a corrugated iron roof.
