Pearse Doherty ( Irish Piaras Ó Dochartaigh , born July 6, 1977 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is an Irish politician, was a Senator in the Seanad Éireann from 2007 to 2010 and has been a member of the Dáil Éireann since November 26, 2010 .

Doherty was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1977, but has lived in Gweedore , County Donegal since he was three and is fluent in Irish . He has been a member of Sinn Féin since 1994 and was a founding member of Ógra Shinn Féin , the youth organization of Sinn Féin. In 2007 he was elected to the Seanad Éireann as the first Sinn Féin member. Prior to his election, he was a member of Donegal County Council since 2004 . In 2002 and 2007 Doherty stood for election to the Dáil Éireann, but could not win a seat. In 2004 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the European Parliament .

In November 2010, he managed to be elected in a by-election as a member of the Dáil Éireann for the constituency of Donegal South West .

Doherty is a trained civil engineer. He is married and has two sons.
