Pebbles (Australia)
The Pebbles , also known as Kunjarra , is a spiritual site of the Whyungu , an Aboriginal tribe . The place is about 12 kilometers north of Tennant Creek in the Australian state of Northern Territory and, like the better known town of Devil's Marbles, has numerous weathered granite balls.
According to tradition, this place is reserved for women of the tribe - men are only allowed to visit it when accompanied. Kunjarra serves as a gathering place and as a place for ceremonies and dances. The place is dedicated to the Munga Munga (also spelled Mungarr Mungarr ), a legendary group of dreamtime women who have been the spiritual owners of the land since ancient times.
In the past, conflicts between natives and immigrants arose around the town of Kunjarra. In 1980 a stone was removed and placed in Tennant Creek to promote tourism, but was returned a year later after protests. A mining company was about to start work on site in 1989, which was prevented by a six-week protest camp by the indigenous peoples after failed negotiations.
