Pebbles (music)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pebbles is the name of an LP series released by Greg Shaw from 1979 .

The material for the compilations took Shaw from his own collection of rare garage rock - Singles from the 1960 's. With Pebbles Shaw tried to take over the concept of the successful Nuggets compilation by Lenny Kaye . The selected pieces were not known to the same extent. The term sixties punk was often used for this music . The reason for this was the subtitles of the series like "Original Artyfacts From The First Punk Era" or "Original Punk Rock From The Psychedelic Sixties" .

At first only US American bands were represented on the compilations , later also European bands were added. The series included 28 LPs and was released on the Archive International Productions sub-label of Shaw's own label, Bomp Records . Hitherto completely unknown bands such as Scope , The Hecklers , Magic Mushrooms , Sea Monkeys and many others were made known to a wider audience.

The Pebbles samplers achieved cult status , especially in Europe , as they were only available in a few record stores. Some of the songs were published by bands like The Undertones , The Cramps and other gecovert .

The Pebbles series can be seen as the beginning of the still successful re-issue wave, the re-release of older pieces of music under a new label. This was followed by other series such as Back From The Grave , Mindrocker , Highs In The Mid-Sixties , Rubbles , Boulders and the Nuggets series released by Rhino Records in 1980 , which is often confused with the first compilation by Lenny Kaye due to the identical name.
