Pechys (unit)

The Pechys is a unit of length used in antiquity, usually 24 finger widths , the so-called classic cubit .

  • Unless otherwise specified, the designated metrological Term Pechys the classical Greco-Roman Elle, the ulna , the Pechys ephtymetrikos to 1½ feet .
  • The Pechys neilos, literally the Nile cubit , also simply called Neilos for short , is - as is common in ancient Egypt - divided into 28 finger-widths.
  • The Pechys histonikos even Mesopotamian Elle or short Mesopotamos called, is a half sexagesimal unit length. It always measures 60 ÷ 2 = 30 finger widths.
  • In Damascus (Syria) the following applies: 1 Pechys = 280 1/5 Parisian lines = 604 millimeters

The measure was also known as the large spade and was about 40 millimeters larger than the small spade.
