Pediatric Glasgow Coma Scale
The Glasgow Pediatric Coma Scale or Pediatric Glasgow Coma Scale (PGCS) is a simple scale used to estimate a level of impairment of consciousness . Similar to the Glasgow Coma Scale, it has been specially developed for children. This most widely used scoring scheme for describing the state of consciousness was developed in Glasgow , Scotland . There are three categories for which points are awarded:
- Eye opening
- Best linguistic answer to speech
- Best motor (movement) response
The Glasgow Coma Scale can only be used to a limited extent in children under the age of 36 months due to the lack of verbal communication skills. This is why this modified scale was developed for younger children. The maximum number of points is 15, the minimum 3 points. The Glasgow Coma Scale is used, for example, to assess the severity of a traumatic brain injury , but also in general in neurology .
