Pedregalejo is a district of Malaga , which is three and a half kilometers east of the city center on the Mediterranean Sea in the Bay of Malaga. It was considered a popular trendy district in Malaga, but has become much quieter in recent years.

Location and structure

The district extends from the eucalyptus grove at Balneario Baños del Carmen to the Arroyo Jaboneros river bed , which has dried up almost all year round and forms the border with the former fishing village of El Palo. The northern local mountain, San Antón, is striking with its two cusps up to 500 meters high.

Pedregalejo used to be a district of El Palo, which is now also a district of Malaga. Many older residents do not differentiate between Pedregalejo and El Palo, even if the differences are clear: Pedregalejo is - especially north of Avenida Juán Sebastián Elcano - a residential area with its well-preserved fishing district on the beach, in which low buildings predominate. In El Palo, on the other hand, there are taller buildings and it is much busier.

Pedregalejo is divided into the areas Baños del Carmen, Las Acacias, Pedregalejo Alto and is connected to the city center by bus routes 11, N-1 (at night) and 34 (irregular). A subway connection is planned for the long term. On the coast the national road 340 runs through the village, one kilometer away from the coast the A-7 motorway leads past the slope with exits at the beginning and end of the village.

Pedregalejo Beach

Beach party in Pedregalejo

At the crescent-shaped bathing bays on the beach promenade of the Paseo Marítimos el Pedregal, which are protected by stone blocks, fish restaurants and bars can be found over a length of approx. 1200 meters. On the fine sandy beach, which is grayish to light brown in color due to the shale in the interior, there are many small fishing boats that sail every night except on Sundays. Typical of Pedregalejo are also those boats on which, converted as grill stations, fresh fish, especially sardine skewers, is grilled in front of every beach restaurant .

Pedregalejo was considered to be a popular trendy area in Malaga , but has become quieter in recent years. In the 1980s and early 1990s, there were several bars and discos along the main streets Juán Sebastián Elcano and Calle Bolivia . At that time, the Ronda de Málaga bypass motorway did not yet exist, and long-distance traffic led via the N-340 through the middle of the two main roads, with the many outgoing Malagueños who were on the roads leading to blockade situations on the weekends. As a result, bar operations in Pedregalejo and El Palo were severely restricted and most of the bars moved to the center.
