Pedro Alonso Niño

Pedro Alonso Niño , called El Negro , (* 1468 in Moguer ; † 1505 ) was a Spanish navigator .

Life

Niño was born near the city of Huelva and was known as El Negro because of his African ancestry . He took part in several Portuguese expeditions to Africa and accompanied Christopher Columbus on his third trip. In 1499 he explored the coast of Venezuela with Cristóbal Guerra , from where he returned to Spain with pearls and colored wood . Niño was accused of theft by the king and was jailed, where he died before his trial.
