life and work

Pedro Reyes studied architecture at the Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de México .

In 2008 Reyes began his ongoing project Palas por Pistolas . Together with the local authorities, Reyes launched a campaign calling on the citizens of Culiacan to surrender their weapons. In return for the weapons, they received household appliances or electronic products. A total of 1527 weapons were collected in this way, then crushed by a steam roller and later melted down. From the metal obtained in this way, spades were made in 1527 , which were used to plant trees in 1527. A follow-up project is Disarm (2012), in which 6,700 weapons were transformed into a series of musical instruments.

Reyes' project "Sanatorium", which was presented at dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012, has been running since 2011 . It is a utopian, makeshift clinic in which typical illnesses of city dwellers such as stress, loneliness or feelings of fear are treated.
