The Peilstein-Warte (from 1926 also Josef Leitner-Warte ) was a lookout point that stood between 1895 and 1947 on the summit of the 716 meter high Peilstein in the municipality of Weissenbach an der Triesting in the Vienna Woods . There has been a new observation tower on the Peilstein since 2013.

history

On October 3, 1894, the Baden local group of the Lower Austrian Mountain Association decided to build a lookout tower on the summit of the Peilstein. During the construction of the control room, the master builder Karner resigned from the building contract, the lookout room was finally completed by Friedrich Böhme from Pottenstein and officially opened on October 20, 1895. The construction costs amounted to 950 guilders . The wooden control room had three storeys and was provided with a roof. The height without the roof was given as ten meters. In the course of a storm in 1898, the roof of the control room was removed during the First World Warthe top floor also had to be demolished due to dilapidation. Between the four tower legs was a small shingle- clad shelter. After a renovation of the control room, in which the control room was increased by one floor to ten meters, the control room was able to reopen on July 4, 1926. It was named after the former chairman of the Baden branch of the Lower Austrian Mountain Club, Josef Leitner. In 1932 another renovation took place in which all four main supports had to be replaced, and a small farmhouse parlor was set up in the hut. An artillery hit on April 10, 1945 in the course of the Second World War damaged the upper part of the observation tower so badly that the observation tower had to be completely demolished in 1947. The shelter hut existed until 1951.

In 2013, a 12 m high observation tower was built on the east side of the Peilsteinhaus , which also serves as a fire escape for the upper and attic floors of the house.
