Peithias
Peithias († 427 BC in Kerkyra (city) ) was a leader of the Democratic Party in Kerkyra during the Peloponnesian War .
Peithias had initially been accused by supporters of Corinthian support of making Kerkyra a slave to Athens . However, he successfully defended himself and subsequently accused five of his wealthiest accusers of religious crimes - again with success. The fine was so high that the convicts could not pay it.
Fearing that Peithias might win the majority of the citizens for a defensive and offensive alliance with Athens, the oligarchic party stormed the Senate, armed with daggers, and killed Peithias, as well as about sixty others. In the Kerkyran civil war that began in this way, which was fought with cruelty that was unusual for the early days of the Peloponnesian War, the democratic party was victorious.
