Pennalism
Pennalism (also Pennalwesen ; from Latin penna "feather") referred to an employment relationship between younger and older students in the student country teams in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The newly enrolled students, called Pennale , were also put under massive pressure by the country teams to join a country team based on their regional origin. The pennals had to serve the older semesters for a year and also pay taxes.
The heyday of Pennalism coincided with the Thirty Years War . It was largely restricted to Protestant universities, with Rostock and Jena as strongholds .
Pennalism could only be suppressed at most Protestant universities after a resolution by the Regensburg Reichstag in 1654.
In the 18th century the relationship was changed to “ fox ” and “ boy ”.
