The Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania is the oldest hospital in the United States . It was founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Bond. The hospital is also home to the oldest surgical amphitheater in the United States and the oldest medical library in the United States. Today the Pennsylvania Hospital is part of the University of Pennsylvania's health care system .
history
In 1751 the legislature chartered a hospital to care for the poor and sick of the city of Philadelphia. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin chose the story of the Good Samaritan as the hospital's founding motto. Mathias Koplin donated the first piece of land to build the clinic in September of the same year. In 1755 the foundation stone for the first building, signed by Benjamin Franklin, was laid at its current location, and in 1756 the first patients were admitted. In the years that followed, the hospital grounds grew through donations and in 1773 the clinic's first assistant doctor, Jacob Ehrenzeller, began training. During the American Revolutionary War , the hospital cared for injured soldiers from the Continental Army and the British armed forces. From 1783 to 1813 the physician and humanist Benjamin Rush was employed at the Pennsylvania Hospital. Under the doctor known as the "Father of American Psychiatry", the Pennsylvania Hospital achieved a pioneering role through the human treatment of the mentally ill. With Philip Syng Physick, the hospital had one of the most famous surgeons in the young United States, who treated famous patients such as John Marshall or the daughter of John Adams and advised Andrew Jackson .
In 1804 the surgical amphitheater was the first to open in America. The American Medical Association named the Pennsylvania Hospital medical library the first and largest and most important medical library in the United States. Because of its medical expertise, numerous injured soldiers are transported for treatment during the American Civil War and Spanish-American War . In 1875 nurse training began at the Pennsylvania Hospital. Over the years, the hospital continued to grow and increasingly developed into a center with diverse specialist disciplines. During the First and Second World Wars , doctors were on duty to treat the wounded in the theaters of war. During the 20th century, the Pennsylvania Hospital developed into a hospital with excellent expertise in numerous disciplines. In 1997, Pennsylvania Hospital joined the University of Pennsylvania Health System at the University of Pennsylvania .
