People's Party of Arunachal
People's Party of Arunachal ( PPA , "Arunachal People's Party ") is a regional party in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India .
Party history
The party was founded on April 10, 1977 by Bakin Pertin in Pasighat . The idea was to create a regional party that would specifically represent the interests of Arunachal Pradesh (at that time still a union territory and only from 1987 a full federal state). From September 18, 1979 to November 2, 1979 the party even briefly provided Tomo Riba as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh . Tomo Riba was also the first party leader. When Janata Dal was founded in 1988/89 , Riba joined the new party along with most of the PPA cadres. As a result, the PPA almost completely dissolved, leaving only a small regional splinter group with the status of a registered party, but no longer that of a state party . After a long shadowy existence, the party reorganized itself at its party meeting on August 22, 2007 and has since gained political weight again. In the elections to the regional parliament of Arunachal Pradesh in 2009, she was able to send elected members to parliament for the first time since 1984. Four MPs were elected in 2009 and five in 2014.
In the 2014 election in Arunachal Pradesh, the PPA won 5 constituencies, while the Congress Party won 42 constituencies and then put the government under Chief Minister Nabam Tuki . On December 20, 2014, the five MPs of the PPA also announced their transfer to the Congress party. To justify this, they stated that as members of the ruling party they could better serve the interests of their voters. In December 2015, however, a crisis loomed in the ruling Congress party. A parliamentary group of initially 16 MPs, led by Kalikho Pul, split from the Congress Party and called for the incumbent Chief Minister Nabam Tuki to be voted out. The number of congressional party dissidents increased as a result of defectors, the government lost its majority and on February 19, 2016 Kalikho Pul was elected as the new Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh with the votes of the congressional party dissidents and the votes of the opposition parties. The congressional dissident faction, which had grown to 30 members (including Puls), joined the PPA on March 4, 2016, so that the party suddenly had 30 of 60 members in the parliament of Arunachal Pradesh and the chief minister. After the Supreme Court ruled that the whole Pulse election event on July 13, 2016, was illegal, the Congress Party dissidents returned to the Congress Party and the PPA's strength in parliament in Arunachal Pradesh was reduced to zero.
Previous election results
The following table shows the election results for the parliament of Arunachal Pradesh, which initially had 30 members and from 1987 onwards 60 members, as well as for Lok Sabha. Arunachal Pradesh is divided into two constituencies for the Lok Sabha elections. The listed share of votes in all-Indian elections refers to all of India. Between 1990 and 2004 the party was not listed in the results by the Indian Electoral Commission. Either she did not take part in the elections, or she only got very few votes.
