Pereswet (laser weapon)

Peresvet ( Russian Пересвет ) is a Russian laser weapon system . It was first unveiled to the public in a speech given by President Vladimir Putin in March 2018 . The system is designed to destroy drones, aircraft and missiles. The technical parameters of Peresvet are largely secret. The system should be ready for use by the Russian armed forces since December 2018. According to General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov, your current task is to protect Russian strategic missiles. Pereswet is also to be used in military aircraft in the future.

The development of Pereswet is associated with the disintegration of the international treaty arms restriction, which began when the USA withdrew from the ABM Treaty in 2001.

The name "Peresvet" was chosen in a referendum on the online platform of the Russian Defense Ministry. Alexander Peresvet was a 14th-century Russian battle monk and a hero in the Battle of the Kulikovo Pole .
