Pergamon Altar (detail): Athene and Alkyneus

Pergamene Baroque is the name given to a formal language found in Pergamon's sculpture from the third century BC to approx. 150 BC.

The term goes back to Jacob Burckhardt . Baroque is used as a synonym for the differentiated, moving world of forms of a late style.

The Pergamene Baroque is characterized by an overloaded, pathetic style of representation. The composition is more concerned with depicting the violence of movements and emotions than with harmony.

The Pergamon Altar and the Laocoon group are typical examples . In addition to sculptures from the Pergamene and Rhodian school of sculpture, other well-known sculptures from High Hellenism such as the Nike of Samothrace , the Borghese fencer and the dying Gaul can also be assigned to the style.
