Pernelle

Pernelle or Peronelle is a French female given name that was used mainly in the late Middle Ages until the 17th century; other variants and writing styles are u. a. Péronelle , Perronelle and Perrenelle , in more southern areas also Peyronella . It is actually the diminutive of Peronne , Peronne and Perronne .

Originally the name is derived from the Latin en Petronilla (or Petronia); the Italian variant is Petronella . In Scandinavia , the name variants Pernille and Pernilla are very common to this day .

According to research by Sara L. Uckelman, the name was quite popular in the Middle Ages. In Paris in 1297 it appeared 92 times in the spelling Perronele , Perronnele and Perronnelle , making it one of the most popular female first names. In the Périgord in the period 1339-1367 the dialectal name variants Peyrona and Peyronella were the third most common name out of a total of 36 female first names.
