Perrine ( Japanese ペ リ ー ヌ 物語 , Perīnu monogatari , literally: story about Perrine ) is an anime television series based on the novel En Famille by the French writer Hector Malot . As part of the World Masterpiece Theater series by the animation studio Nippon Animation , the series was released in 1978 in Japan and was later marketed internationally.

The story takes place in the 19th century at the time of the Industrial Revolution in France.

action

After her father dies in Bosnia, the girl Perrine lives with her mother in a wagon pulled by a donkey. The two are poor. Accompanied by their dog, Baron, they want to go to the city of Maraucourt (France) to find Perrine's paternal grandfather, a factory owner. He thinks nothing of his daughter-in-law, Perrine's mother, because she is not French, but (half) Indian. He cut off all contact with the family.

On the trip, the mother falls ill and dies in Paris. The girl has to make the rest of the journey alone and sells the donkey during this. When Perrine arrives at her destination, she does not reveal herself as her grandfather continues to despise Perrine and her mother. She takes a job as a translator in the factory of her now blind grandfather. Despite his dislike of his daughter-in-law's Indian roots, the grandfather lets his son-in-law be looked for because he is already old and wants to hand over the factory to his son. Through this research he learns of the death of his son and his wife. It turns out that the translator is his granddaughter.

At the end of the story, the grandfather has an operation to regain his eyesight and see his granddaughter.
