Persjarikatan Oelama

Persjarikatan Oelama (Scholars 'Association or Union of Islamic Religious Scholars; English Union of Religious Scholars), also Madjlisoel' Ilmi or Persyarikatan Ulama , etc., is an Islamic organization in Indonesia . It was founded in West Java in 1911 by Orthodox religious scholars for the purpose of reform. In 1916 she opened a school and founded an orphanage. The movement engaged in economic activities such as printing, weaving, and agriculture. The batik and perfume dealer Abdul Halim (1887–1962) was the central figure of the organization until his death. Abdul Halim brought the ideas for social reforms with him from Mecca . The Islamic movement Persatuan Ummat Islam (PUI), headed by Abdul Halim , later emerged from the organization . Other movements founded in Indonesia during the founding period were (with founding year): Jami'at Khair (1905), Muhammadiyah (1912) and Al-Irsyad (1913 or 1914).
