Personal store
The Personal Store ( PST ) of the e-mail program Microsoft Outlook for Windows is a proprietary container file in which tasks, notes, e-mails and the calendar are saved. The PST file format was published by Microsoft as part of its Open Specification Promise .
use
In addition to a standard file, Outlook can manage any number of other PST files. A copy of the PST files can be created for a data backup . Other Outlook data that is managed outside of the PST files (e.g. e-mail accounts, signatures, program settings, etc.) are not taken into account.
The maximum size of this file type was 2 gigabytes for the Windows Outlook versions Outlook 97 through Outlook 2002.
The format of the Outlook PST file has changed with the version of Outlook 2003. As of Outlook 2003, a Unicode PST file is used with a maximum memory size of 20 gigabytes. With Office 2010 this limit was raised to 50 gigabytes. After changing a key in the Windows registry , this size can be limited again.
import and export
While Entourage could not handle PST files, Outlook for Mac 2011 can only import Unicode PST files, older ANSI PST files from Outlook 2002 and older cannot be imported. However, it is not possible to export an OLM file, the container format of Outlook for Mac, to a PST file.
The format can only be exported to other mail programs in Windows if Outlook is also installed (use of MAPI ). Alternatively there is the libpst library, an application of which is the command line program readpst , which is able to read the format.
Joint use of PST files as groupware is not possible with Outlook. The groupware for Outlook is the Microsoft Exchange Server . There are few alternatives to the Exchange Server that function as a MAPI server based on networked PST files, e . B. Public ShareFolders or OLfolders .
