Person-centered approach (psychotherapy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The person-centered approach , which goes back to the American psychologist Carl Rogers (1902–1987), is a further development from a specific form of psychotherapy , namely conversation psychotherapy . This worldwide widespread psychotherapy approach is primarily a clinical-psychological treatment method for mentally impaired people and is now considered one of the classic psychotherapy methods in humanistic psychology . The approach was developed to differentiate it from directive and interpretative procedures and the medical model in counseling and psychotherapy.

It is based on the conviction that humans have an inherent potential for personal development and constructive shaping of their life, which can unfold and realize in person-to-person encounters (so-called update tendency ).

Person-centered psychotherapy and counseling is consistently based on the experiences and the world of the person who is seen as an expert in their experience. Professional help from person-centered psychotherapists or counselors is offered in a climate of freedom and openness and is favored by basic attitudes that are based on unconditional appreciation , empathy and authenticity (also known as " congruence "). So the personal development of the person can be supported. The psychological growth process that takes place in and through relationships with the world around you makes it possible to gain more trust in yourself and to be able to make increasingly independent decisions.

The medium of therapy or counseling is conversation and other (physical, playful, creative, artistic) means of expression and communication that are only used with a view to promoting the client's contact with himself and with the psychotherapist and enabling existential encounters ; the choice of means is left to the client.

Person-centered psychotherapy takes place in the form of individual therapy for adults and children as well as couple, family and group therapy. The person-centered approach to supervision was for all typical settings ( individual supervision , group supervision , team supervision developed ...).
