Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts

The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) is a cultural center that opened in 1991 in the Australian state of Western Australia . Exhibitions of contemporary art and performances of the performing arts take place at PICA . It is located on James Street in north Perth , and together with a museum, a library ( State Library ) and other exhibition rooms, it forms the Perth Cultural Center .

The cultural center is located in the former building of the 1895-97 erected Perth Boys and Girls School , which since 1980 in the Register of the National Estate under monument stands. The building was used as a school under different names from its construction until 1958, and then as part of the Perth Technical College from 1958 to 1987. In 1988–91, PICA had the building renovated and in November 1991 the center opened.

Between 2004 and 2007, the PICA hosted an average of 20 temporary exhibitions and 12 performances per year. In addition, publications were issued and some artists and scientists were supported through studio stays and research grants. The annual budget of PICA was about 1 million $ A . Every year around 50,000 visitors visited the exhibitions and around 10,000 visitors attended the performances.
