background

Population development in Delmenhorst

In the course of industrialization, the city of Delmenhorst also grew, its population almost doubled between December 1854 and December 1875. This also increased the population's need for medical care, and an "Association for the Construction of a Hospital" was founded, which collected donations in order to set up a hospital in the city. The share capital came together through donations from the entire Grand Duchy of Oldenburg , and the state parliament also gave the association one hectare of land on the castle island .

After the foundation stone was laid on May 22, 1878, the hospital was able to start operations on May 4, 1879 with the initial number of 12 beds in two wards and six private rooms. The city continued to grow, however, extensions were made and the number of beds increased to 102 by 1902, but the required capacities could not be achieved. At the census in December 1900 Delmenhorst already had 16,579 inhabitants. Patients had to be relocated to Bremen repeatedly because there was not enough space.

During the First World War , the hospital was used as a military hospital . It was not until 1925 that a decision was made to build a new clinic at a different location that could meet the needs of the time. The municipal clinics , built by the city itself, were inaugurated in 1928.

The Peter Elisabeth Hospital was closed, the buildings were used as a vocational school in 1929, and later alternative rooms were set up for the Max Planck Gymnasium , which opened in 1952 . In 1965 the side wings were demolished, in 1972 the main building.
