Delmenhorst Castle

The castle Delmenhorst , including Castle Delmenhorst called, is a Outbound Wasserburg on the "Castle Island" in the city of Delmenhorst in Oldenburg region in Lower Saxony . The castle was the center of the city and county of Delmenhorst for almost 500 years .

history

After the end of the Stedinger Wars in 1234, the Oldenburg counts founded a moated castle surrounded by two graves in the swampy Delmen lowlands, starting with a small farm called “De Horst” to secure their conquered Siedingen area . On July 27, 1259, the castle was first mentioned ... in castro nostro Delmenhorst when a land sale was sealed by Count Johann I. von Oldenburg .

From 1281 to 1436 the rule on Delmenhorst was with the older line of the Counts of Delmenhorst and then fell back to the County of Oldenburg . From 1440 to 1482 the rule of Delmenhorst was with Count Gerd the Brave , after which the rule fell to Münster . In 1547 Count Anton I of Oldenburg recaptured the rule and the county .

In the 16th century, the castle became a prestigious and important Renaissance - castle with Lustgarten expanded. In 1667 the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst became Danish . In the 17th century the castle began to deteriorate.

From 1711, after the county was pledged to the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , the castle was sold for demolition, gradually the demolition of the castle began and in 1787 the remainder of the castle tower "Blue Tower", the coat of arms of the city of Delmenhorst, was torn down and the stones used for the construction of the new city church.

At the end of the 19th century the "Peter Elisabeth Hospital" was built on the empty Burgstall . At the beginning of the 20th century it was converted into a commercial vocational school and in 1972 it was demolished.

The former castle grounds were redesigned into a park in 1906, which is traversed by the former moats of the inner and outer grafts. In 1979 the former count's garden house, which Anton I von Oldenburg and Delmenhorst had built on Gut Weyhausen an der Ochtum in 1564 and redesigned in Baroque style in 1723, was rebuilt at the entrance to the castle island. Today events, exhibitions and weddings take place here.

The remains of the castle are four meters deep as a ground monument , spolia of which can be viewed in the Delmenhorst City Museum . A few remains of the foundation wall and floor markings on the castle island show the floor plan of the moated castle.
