Johann I (Oldenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann I of Oldenburg (* around 1204, † around 1270) was Count of Oldenburg .

government

After the death of his father, Count Christian II. In 1233, he followed his uncle Otto I as Count of Oldenburg in 1243 and ruled the county alone from 1251.

In 1244, together with Otto I., he founded the Cistercian monastery Rosenthal in Menslage , which was moved in 1251 to an existing fortification of the counts in the Börsteler Wald .

In 1258/59 he participated in the Bremen collegiate feud for the dignity of Bremen's archbishopric in favor of his cousin , which ended in defeat for him. At least he was able to prevent the Oberstedinger allied with the House of Lippe , which had provided the previous Archbishop of Bremen, from regaining the autonomy they had lost in 1234. Furthermore, argued with Rüstringen , Östringen and Stedingen and claimed his rights and new acquisitions. However, in the years up to the conclusion of peace in 1260, he suffered severe devastation in the Lower Steding area north of the Hunte .

In a dispute with Bremen-Stadt he gave up Berne Castle and founded it together with his uncle Delmenhorst , which was first mentioned in 1247, which provoked Stedingen. However, its headquarters remained in Oldenburg .

Like his ancestors, he argued a lot with the Wildeshausen cousins . Ultimately, their county for Oldenburg was lost to the Bishops of Münster and Archbishops of Bremen, which was the reason for centuries of disputes with these spiritual powers that increasingly constricted Oldenburg-Delmenhorst.

Marriage and offspring

Johann I married Richza von Hoya, daughter of Count Heinrich II , with whom he had the following children:
