Christian II (Oldenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian II of Oldenburg (documented before 1209; † 1233 ) was Count of Oldenburg from 1209 .

Christian II was the son of Count Moritz I of Oldenburg († 1209) and Salome von Wickrath. He is mentioned for the first time in an undated, but probably not long before 1209, document issued by Moritz I. In 1209 he appears in a document from Gerhard I , at the time Bishop of Osnabrück , as of legal age.

After the death of his father, he and his brother Otto I succeeded him. The two ruled in harmony and were able to significantly expand the Oldenburg rights and claims in land dignities and feuds through traditional feuds with the cousins and feudal lords, including the Counts of Hoya .

In March 1233 he and his brother Otto I were among the guarantors of the contract with which Archbishop Gerhard II of Bremen secured the help of the city of Bremen against the Stedinger . It is documented here for the last time.

His participation in the Stedinger Crusades of 1233 and 1234 cannot be proven. After his death Otto I. took over the rule together with Christian's son Johann I.
