Peter Lalor

Peter Lalor (born February 5, 1827 in Tinakill , Ireland ; † February 9, 1889 , Melbourne , Australia ) was one of the main leaders of the Eureka Stockade Rebellion.

Lalor was born in Tinakill, Ireland. His father was a landowner and a political opponent of the British presence in his country. Peter trained as an engineer at Carlton College and Trinity College , Dublin . In 1852 he emigrated to Australia. First he worked briefly on the rail link between Melbourne and Geelong. He then moved to Ovens Valley to look for gold. Lalor led the miners in their struggle against the management of the gold industry. He was injured in the Eureka Stockade and had to have his arm amputated . His supporters hid him until it became clear that the miners would not be found guilty in court.
