Wilhelm Ellinghaus (1951)

Hermann Bernhard Wilhelm Ellinghaus (born June 27, 1888 in Coesfeld , † September 8, 1961 in Karlsruhe ) was a German lawyer, politician ( SPD ) and judge of the Federal Constitutional Court .

After graduating from high school, Ellinghaus studied law in Munich , Berlin , Freiburg im Breisgau and Münster , passed the first state examination in law, worked as a trainee lawyer and completed his studies with the second state examination. After he was initially a court assessor, he settled as a lawyer in Hagen in 1918 and was later admitted as a notary.

Ellinghaus joined the SPD, became district administrator ( Angerburg district ) in 1928 and vice president of the government ( Gumbinnen ) in 1930 . In the course of the National Socialist seizure of power in 1933, he was removed from office.

After the Second World War , Ellinghaus initially worked as a lawyer in Hanover and was appointed regional president of the Hanover administrative district in 1945. In 1946 he became inspector general for denazification there . From November 1946 to June 1947 he served as Minister of Justice in the appointed Lower Saxony state government led by Prime Minister Hinrich Wilhelm Kopf . In addition, he had been a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament since 1947. From September 13, 1951 to October 12, 1955, he was a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court. Like his colleague Kurt Zweigert , he was not appointed by Federal President Theodor Heuss on September 7, but only on September 13, 1951 .

His brother Hermann Ellinghaus (1890–1958) was professor of economics at the Hohenheim Agricultural University from 1936 to 1956 and was entrusted with the provision of the subject at the TH Stuttgart .

From Wilhelm Ellinghaus' pen comes a small pamphlet, probably published by the Hans Soldan Foundation around 1957 , "In the name of the law? Documentary representation of two witch trials from 1632", in which he deals with the Coesfeld witch trials, inspired by a " very clear dream face "on several nights in 1952, as he explains in the preface.
