Peter Mathis (* 1961 in Hohenems ) is an Austrian photographer .

Live and act

Peter Mathis lives in Hohenems in Austria. Even as a teenager, he captured his experiences in nature with a camera. He made this hobby his profession in 1986. In his professional work, he focuses primarily on outdoor and sports photography and is one of the masters of his field in the areas of skiing and snowboarding, mountaineering and climbing, mountain biking and racing bikes, motor sports and landscape. His assignments regularly take him to a wide variety of places around the world. In 2007 he was awarded the title of Hasselblad Masters in Sweden and in 2008 he was awarded a Master of European Photography by the Association of European Professional Photographers in Belgium.

His first book was published in 1992 and many more followed, including a. Sport climbing in the Alps, freeride and passion for Vorarlberg.

Since 2009 he has been increasingly committed to landscape photography and is deliberately targeting the large format area as well. Digital fine art prints were made of numerous motifs, which are becoming increasingly popular in the art photography market.

For some time he has been opening up a new field of work with portrait photography and its diverse facets. And he is increasingly concentrating on black and white photography in order to research its laws and to sound out its enormous range of expression and bring it into the picture. This applies to both the landscape and the portrait pictures.

Regardless of the genre of the picture, the authenticity of his work plays an outstanding role for Peter Mathis. Its essential design elements include light and image structure. The aim is to use the light given by the motif as optimally as possible so that it can serve the design. A picture is therefore not simply the reproduction of a motif, but is created with the camera on site. He firmly rejects the simulation of artificial lighting moods or movements on the computer that are physically incomprehensible. He is interested in "true" nature, that is, what we can actually experience and not an artifact.

Much of the work is about recognizing and capturing the fleetingness of the decisive moment, which requires a great deal of patience and experience. Any kind of showmanship is deliberately avoided.
