Portrait of Peder Syv

Peter Petersen Syv (born February 22, 1631 in Syv near Roskilde , † February 17, 1702 in Hellested ) was a Danish philologist.

Syv came from a long-established wealthy farming family. Among other things, he studied pedagogy and theology and, after successfully completing this degree, worked as a teacher and pastor.

Syv made his debut in 1663 with the essays on his mother tongue ("Nogle betenkninger om det Cimbriske Sprog" and "Den danske Sprog-Kunst eller Grammatica"). As a collector and custodian of folk art, Syv laid a foundation on which all his successors could build. The “Hundredvisebog” by Andersen Sørensen Vedel could also be expanded by Syv on the basis of his research.

Peter Syv died in Hellested on February 17, 1702 at the age of almost 71.
