Peter Waskönig

Peter Waskönig (born February 28, 1932 in Wuppertal - Elberfeld ; † August 23, 2017 ) was a German entrepreneur and promoter of research and science. In 2005, the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Life

Waskönig took over the insulated cable company Waskönig + Walter, which has been based in Wuppertal for three generations, in 1962 and, after moving to Ramsloh near Oldenburg, turned it into a cable factory with around 500 employees today. In 1991 he handed over management to his sons Michael and Jörg Waskönig and then served on the supervisory board of the group of companies with branches in Denmark and Switzerland.

Waskönig held the presidency of the Oldenburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (1986–1994) and the chairmanship of the economic association “Der kleine Kreis” (1996–2003). In 1994 he also took over the chairmanship of the Universitätsgesellschaft Oldenburg eV and led it to one of the largest of its kind in Germany with around 1000 members by 2003. As part of this commitment to the university, he also founded the Peter Waskönig Foundation to promote talented students and was one of the main initiators of the Oldenburg technology and start-up center .
