1984 cycle

The name of this photo series was inspired by the book by George Orwell in 1984. Šálek stylizes everyday activities in the spirit of Orwell's sci-fi story; Recordings with a touch of black humor are supposed to evoke an ironic idea of what life could be like in a state where Big Brother rules. Perhaps we should not only learn a lesson from the past, but also think about what our life could look like in the future if we do not learn from it ... (The viewer may be interested in the fact that Šálek fled communist Czechoslovakia in 1981 and only returned to the Czech Republic after the “Velvet Revolution”.) Most of the props in the photos are from around 1984 or earlier. The cycle has also been published in book form.
