The Palatinate Steinhauermuseum is housed in a listed historic half-timbered house on the market square of the Palatinate community of Alsenz .

Subject

The main topics are technology, tools and instruments, industry and industrial history, everyday culture, handicrafts and traditions, cultural anthropology and folklore, as well as modern and contemporary art.

Numerous exhibits and documents deal with the history of stone carving , from the sandstone deposits in the region, the quarrying to the various techniques of processing. Equipment and tools of the stone cutter, the versatility of the sandstone, but also the social history, the life of the stone cutter and their families, are the subject of the documentation.

A sandstone sample exhibition in the lapidarium shows the diversity of the sandstone types found in Germany. Petrifications and sandstone exhibits from Roman times to the present day, professional film material, lectures and readings and, last but not least, the specialist library offer the visitor extensive information on the subject of the stonemasonry . A look into the faithfully reproduced planning and construction office gives an impression of the working methods in the 19th century. The stone carving museum invites the visitor to look into the microscope to look at the structure of the rock and to actively work on a sandstone with a tool. Temporary exhibitions, lectures and readings are held regularly in the gallery.
