Scout grave

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The scout grave is the memorial of a disaster on the Liedberg in the Liedberg district of Korschenbroich, with a stone cross and inaugurated on June 21, 1931 in the early morning of June 22, 1930 .

history

Until 1891, quartz sand was mined underground in Liedberg, which was used, among other things, for glass production or as a dirt binder. In Liedberg the tunnels were called the "rock cellar".

The accident occurred in the tunnel of the "old sand pit". 16 members of a "colonial scout group" of the Schinderhannes scout club from Düsseldorf celebrated the summer solstice in front of the tunnel entrance from June 21, 1930 and then the admission of new members in the tunnel. They were led by the sixteen-year-old technician apprentice Albert Voigt.

They were seven hundred meters from the entrance, which itself was only a knee-high hole, in a side corridor called the "pirate hall". At four in the morning, while a document was being buried, a rock fall occurred. A stone block weighing about ten tons fell down. One youth was able to free himself, a second could be pulled out. Three young people perished: the fourteen year old carpenter apprentice Heinrich Pöstgens, Albert Voigt and the sixteen year old electrician apprentice Gustav Paul Schneider. The body of Pöstgens, the youngest participant in the boy scout meeting, was recovered by the Liedberg volunteer fire department and later buried in Düsseldorf. The remains of Voigt were found by the fire brigade, but could not be recovered. There was no sign of Schneiders. The access to the cave was closed with concrete and earth.
