The Roman Catholic parish church Eibenstein is consecrated to St. Aegidius and subordinate to the deanery of Geras . The place Eibenstein belongs to the Lower Austrian municipality Raabs an der Thaya .

history

The time when the parish was founded is not known, but the first documentary mention was made in 1300. In 1467 and 1475 a Wolfgang Müller obtained indulgences in Rome for those who contributed to the construction or decoration of the parish church. A reconciliation took place in 1494 , the reason for which is unknown.

Between 1569 and 1731 Eibenstein was a branch of the parish Drosendorf . After the church was restored in 1730 under Abbot Nikolaus Zandt and a new parsonage was built, the parish was looked after by the Geras Abbey .

description

The parish church of St. Aegidius is located on a hill above the Thaya opposite the Eibenstein castle ruins . From the street it can only be reached via a steep set of stairs axially to the facade tower.

The Romanesque, Gothic-style hall church with its baroque west tower is surrounded by a cemetery with a sloping wall. The presented, baroque, three-storey west tower with bevelled edges between sloping gables dates from the second third of the 18th century, is structured by bezels and pilasters and has an onion helmet over clock gables and a south-facing gallery staircase. The simple nave and the recessed rectangular choir are essentially Romanesque. The sacristy extension north of the choir is provided with a renewed plaster structure. A wall painting from the late 16th century was uncovered in 1975.
