The Roman Catholic parish church Etzen is located in the south of the village of Etzen in the municipality of Groß Gerungs in the Zwettl district in Lower Austria . The parish church consecrated to St. Lawrence of Rome - incorporated into Zwettl Abbey - belongs to the Zwettl deanery of the diocese of St. Pölten . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .

history

The Romanesque country church from the 13th century received a Gothic sacristy annex in the 15th century. The church was baroque in the late 18th century. The tower presented in the west - with massive stonework, probably a Romanesque defense tower at its core - has a bell-shaped dome from 1802. Renovations were carried out in 1907 and 1918. At the cemetery there are two gravestones in the Biedermeier style from the mid-19th century.

architecture

A Romanesque, slightly lower round apse, slightly cut off with the triumphal arch, adjoins the long rectangular nave - in its core Romanesque. The Romanesque arched windows of the church were enlarged in Baroque style. The Gothic two-storey sacristy extension with two Gothic rectangular windows stands on the northeast side of the nave. A Gothic three-pass gable - probably part of the former sacrament niche - is walled into the rectory wall.

Furnishing

The high altar with rococo decor was built around 1770 and shows the altar leaf St. Laurentius and carries late baroque side figures.

The organ case with rococo decor bears angels and putti making music. Ferdinand Drackh names a bell in 1724.
